I unfortunately live in a a very Mormon household with a mother who might actually have a heart attack if she knew about my craft. I’m just looking for advice and/or stories from other people who practice in secret.
A lot of us live in a religious society. And even if your family or friends are not so religious, they still associate witchcraft with evil, or, even worse, think that people who practice are just crazy) I live with my boyfriend who is very concerned about everything related to magic, he thinks that if a person practices craft, then he is dangerous and can just curse someone. So it's absolutely a bad idea to tell him something like "I have a coming-out for you, babe... I'm a witch!") And it's really hard to keep a secret from someone close. Also because you can practice only when you are home alone. So I just say that I'm a "spiritual person" and "I believe that everything around us has its energy". I hide my tools in a little beautiful jewelry box and use herbs, wine, candles and a lot of stuff from my kitchen. As for me, the most important thing is to understand that you are not doing something evil, you are not a bad person and you shouldn't feel guilty.
I would glad to communicate with people who share my views and beliefs, talking about practice and life experience) So feel free to write to me.
I am older, divorced, children are all most out of the house, and have my own place. My daughter who's still at home knows that I have begun in the practice and she is actually interested in it. I only started in March and am soaking up a lot of the information out there. My friends are from several different Christian religions like Catholicism, Seventh-day Adventist, and one of my good friends is just a Community Church goer. None of them know and one or two of them may not care but the others have strong opinions on anything other than their religion. I say your beliefs are your beliefs. I kind of go with the Mantra that the Freemasons have, "when you are with friends and relatives, you did not discuss religion or politics." Those two right there cause most of the Discord, hatred, and the evil throughout the world. If everyone kept their beliefs to themselves and did not force them on others, the world would be a much greater place. IMHO. Like Olivia says, your practice is personal and you do things the way you do them and the way you are most comfortable with. ~Light and Love~
I'm in a similar situation my friend, I must practice in secret, most of the time filling my Grimoir at work and keeping my practice a total secret. Best advice I can give is to trust in your intuition and be strong. (Easier said than done, I know.)
i also practice in secret. i live in a very christian household and a good majority of my family is also catholic. they would FREAK if they knew about my practice and i would probably be disowned lol. although i don't have much time left living at home so hopefully things get better.
regarding how i practice, i don't have many tools. a few candles, some crystals, and a book and that is about it. very easy to hide and also not expensive so i purchase everything myself and when i am alone, which helps because then i don't have to explain to my mum why there is a charge to her card on a book about witchcraft hahaha. other than that, practice when home alone or at night. i typically lock my door and put on some music or videos so you can't hear me anything going on. just remember that not everything that works for me will work for you. do what you feel comfortable doing! much light and love to you.
I'm practicing in secret for now until I move. The family I'm staying with is sort of a temporary host family, but they are very christian and strongly disapprove of anything related to witches or witchcraft. The two things that have helped me cope with it while still maintaining my practice;
- Instead of doing my spell work at home I keep all of my tools in a picnic basket in my car. I usually go to a beach, forest or lake that isn't busy or populated to practice (sunrise and sundown are great times, and can even work great with certain spells).
- It's hard to find but building relationships with someone or a group that shares your beliefs and practice helps so much! I have a friend who practices that I'll occasionally meet up with outside of home and having that third party reassurance is really valuable to me and keeps me going.
I hope you can find a space for your practice that works for you! Be safe, light and love.
I do ...sort of. I have my own place but since my family are Christians, they don't know. I don't talk to my children about much because I'm afraid they'll slip and say something.
I am semi practicing in secret. My husband and Daughters know I practice. My hubby is okay with it and sees how much I love to try new things. Some of our Daughters (I have 4) are very interested in it .They love to know what gemstone/crystal helps for what, what incense helps to cleanse a space energetically. My 1st and 3rd daughters love to help me. My second doesn't believe in it and is like mom I'm with grandma beliefs (Christianity). My youngest is well to young to understand what's going on but loves seeing what I do. I'm not telling my own parents, brothers and sisters as they will make fun of me and call me names. With everything I do. My youngest sister did find my tarotdeck and I did a reading for her. She didn't believed it would work but when she got her reading she was like that was on point and I told her stuff she didn't talked about with anyone so then she was okay that was spooky. One of my brothers was there as well, still not convinced. So all they know is I sometimes read tarot.
When I started working with crystals and gemstones to help me with my IBS and my insecurties they laughed and said I wouldn't work. But I can Eat again and I feel much more confident in my daily life. My mom said well if you didn't strayed from God you would have been fine. What made me very mad because Christianity isn't for me. My daughters are baptized but I never felt at home in the christian community. That's another story.
I have one Friend who does know I am exploring witchcraft and she really likes to see me grow into the woman I am becoming. She said I was really becoming more confident and I have a very calm and relaxing presence and before she felt I was anxious.
also practicing in mostly secret. me any my husband currently live with my in laws =/ . both of which are catholic and my mother in law is extremely judgmental and closed minded to most things I enjoy in life. my bedroom is in the basement and I have no windows, so burning any type of sage or incense is a no go for me as my husband hates! the smells. I try to work around these things as best as possible. my altar ( which I just started creating ) is on a small bookshelf I made and divided into 3 shelves. I do the best I can but if im being honest, sometimes it can get very hard and discouraging not being able to use the items I would really love to, or being able to practice or cast spells whenever I feel. I try to stay positive as best as possible but we are only human and feeling so arise. please feel free to reach out to me if you ever need advice or to vent !!! hope all is well and keep growing in your practice ! don't let anyone or anything stop you from being your true self =)
I’m in the broom closet too so I totally understand. My biggest tips and tricks are: do digital magic (make your bos online with a note app or google docs or something similar; do emoji spells; look up digital witchcraft), use regular playing cards or look up alternative cartomancy techniques instead of tarot, look up intrinsic magic and paper spells, do candle spells and kitchen magic (which are easier to hide), diy your tools or buy them from the dollar tree or thrift stores where it’s cheap and less conspicuous, use what’s in your house, and cast a creativity spell to help you find more creative ways to practice without being obvious
I'm half in and half out the broom closet, my closest friends and partner know that I started practicing it, but my family is very catholic and disapproves anything related to witches or witchcraft, cause they think is something from the devil. I study archeology and since I was a child I loved halloween so for my family is not really a big deal to see things like a little Bastet statue or pumpkins or even crystals (they think they are pretty)that I own around my room. So I just use what I have and can disguise as a decor as it.
But for example I can't own tarot cards cause that is way to suspicious; or huge candles or a cauldron, or make a huge altar which makes me really sad.
I wouldn't say I practice in secret exactly, but I'm very private about my spirituality in general. I tell very few people about my beliefs on the whole, and even fewer about my actual practices. My close friends know I do tarot but, besides my boyfriend, that's about the extent of the knowledge. Anyone who enters my room would see my bookshelf full of herbs, candles, stones, etc, and my altar so I don't hide it in that way. Then again, most people don't get to enter my room in the first place. I'm not afraid of opinions about it, and my family is not religious, but they would definitely call it "weird" and brush it off.

I'm actually Atheist Agnostic but like the ideas of Wicca since I was small! I practice in secret
