I have been reading what some other witches have to say about ancestor work, and some of them are of the opinion that if it is not something in your family's tradition, you shouldn't be doing it and that it's disrespectful and all that.
I personally am Polish, Spanish, and Filipino. All of the family members I know about are roman catholic, and I have only heard stories about certain ancestors of mine who would do strange things. Like I have one ancestor who would supposedly disappear into the forest for weeks at a time but that's about it for stories of potential witches in the family. Also, she was polish, and I've had a tough time finding much of anything on pre-christian traditions of the Slavic world. I know that in the Philippines there is a tradition of communicating with the dead, but I haven't had much contact with that side of my family because they all still live on the islands.
Am I fixating too much on the religion of these ancestors? I'm sure there are Christians out there who do it, and are fine, whilst others see this as some kind of cultural appropriation. Does that matter? I'm just hoping for your perspectives on this.
Tldr: I am interested in looking into spirit work regarding ancestors, but if most of my family (to my knowledge) has been some brand of christian, is that generally, frowned upon?
