I really really really want to learn a new language. I am fluent in English but I am half Hispanic and live in a place where the majority speaks spanish. Just to know and be closer to my roots I want to learn Spanish. I know some basic things and I have tried unsuccessfully to learn Spanish. Please Help

This is not a magickal response but... Think of how babies learn languages. They don't learn to read, they don't do grammar exercises, they don't learn to write -- they listen and absorb the sounds & structures of the language(s) they are surrounded by. As we age, our minds lose a certain amount of flexibility and it can become more difficult to acquire new languages, but I'd suggest following a similar model. Tune in to Spanish-language radio or TV for 1-2 hours every day (TV might be better because then you can also pick up body language). Avoid "telenovelas" & shows dubbed into Spanish from other languages; go for talk shows, variety shows, even newscasts... and just listen. (Find the common words you recognize (Spanish, French, Italian & Portuguese share an astonishing number of recognizable words with English), let your mind adjust to hearing them in context. (You can even try the old-fashioned method of letting a vocabulary tape loop-play quietly while you sleep.) When things start sounding familiar and you can pick out words and maybe even entire phrases that you recognize, then move on to picking up actual vocabulary. Again, don't worry too much about the structure (grammar) of the language; just start loading your brain with the words necessary to build statements. Then, once you feel like you've got maybe 50-100 easily remembered nouns & verbs, find some sooooper basic grammar books or exercises that will help you put them into actual sentences... and as you become more comfortable with the pronunciation and structure of the spoken language, you can start filling in the blanks for missing vocabulary while picking up the rules for singular/plural, masculine/feminine (one thing the mishmash that is English thankfully doesn't bother with much), past/present/future, and all that other good stuff. You can get into reading through that, and the reading will help you get into writing... but just pretend you're a toddler who's learning how to communicate with their parents & peers and you'll be mimicking the style of language learning that your brain is hard-wired to use. :-) Good luck, and have fun! (And yeah, a "help me learn faster" spell ain't gonna hurt, either. LOL)
