Where I live, none of the windows in my house get a lot of moonlight (at least not for very long), so I have been just setting my bottles out in my yard in a spot where they will get as much moonlight as possible. However, as the winter months approach, I don't think that setting glass bottles of water out in the snow would be a very good idea. I fear that the bottles will break from the ice forming in them. And even if the bottles don't break, my moon water will still be frozen solid. It seems frustrating to me if I have to wait for my moon water to thaw before I can even use it. I am wondering if anyone has any tips or ideas for how to make moon water in the winter without running into this issue. And putting salt in it isn't really an option since I like to put some moon water in my tea. Any thoughts on this would be helpful.

I used a canning jar, and left headspace for when the ice expands, but i live in an area where it takes it a few hours to freeze, so it doesnt expand quickly enpigh to bust the jar. Could you set up a cheap cooler and put the bottle in withthe lid off so the moonlight shines in the top, but the sides are kept a bit warmer?
don’t you just love winter lol! I live in southern Manitoba so I get what your saying and have been wondering the same thing. We currently do not have much snow (not yet anyway), otherwise I would try using that to shield the jar seeing snow is a great insulator when packed properly. I am going to try to set a mason jar out 1/2 filled and slightly on an angle to allow the ice more room to expand if it does freeze. Not sure what the temperature will be like for the December full moon, currently our temperatures have only been in the -1 to -12 (which is not cold at all for our area). Let me know if you come up with any other ideas. I have a soft walled cooler that I might try using as well with some towels or blankets around the jar, it will all depend on what the weather will be like.
