I think you have go by your gut. Literally in my case, I adapted a part of eastern beliefs and use energy I store in my lower dan tien (near your stomach). I visualize "a pool" of energy there and let it slowly flow/program it for ritual usage. You can also physicaly feel it depleting. Once I feel "empty" I ground myself and raise some energy from the ground or I just slowly let my dan tien refill itself. If I need A LOT of energy for a ritual, I just ground myself and channel energy from the Earth through my chakra system directly into the ritual.
We all have a limited amount of willpower that we can use everyday. Don't overexert yourself through using too much Magic. Use magic strategically and when necessary to make the shifts that you really want. And in incremental stair step toward your goals. This will keep you from burning out. Typically when I have overdone it on too much at once, I'll have to take a break for a week or two and not do any magic at all. Just to recuperate. I'm not sure if there's any way to really exactly measure how much you can exert of yourself, but there's no need to do that. For me just doing a couple of spells a day is more than enough. And then give yourself a rest after you've completed those. Two spells a day may even be too much. If you spread yourself too thin between too many spells you will water down your magic and you simply won't get the results because your focus is not there.
Think about it a little bit like if you have projects for school or work to work on. How many can you honestly do at the same time with great enough Focus and energy to make it come out perfect?
Lately I have been doing one spell a day common for a 33-day long ritual that requires no more than probably 10 minutes of my time. And honestly it's quite an easy spell and requires more incantation than lots of emotional Alchemy,... and even that is a lot for me right now considering everything else going on in life LOL.. When there is a lot of emotional transmutation going on during the spell, it will take far greater energy from you.
