I mean... it's not a bad idea. Like obviously it's important to be smart about it. You sound brand spanking new so I wouldn't summon or attempt to contact someone that you don't know, just because since you are so new it'd be pretty easy for a bored or tricky spirit to see you dancing around your house screaming (am I the only one...) and go, "oh she said she's trying to contact Frank Sinatra, well save the last dance for me, baby!" It's important to be respectful obviously, like don't be a dick to the spirits. In my experience, the most important thing above all is to be firm about your boundaries when trying to contact spirits, especially if and when you contact something that you don't want to stay chillin in your house. You can't be like "um so this is kinda awkward lol but my mom needs me to set the table now so if you could just go that'd be super great" you gotta be like "This is my house and you need to leave now" and if they don't leave just get bitchier with every delivery. (99% of the time, at least when I've done this, they respect your boundaries and leave when asked.)
It's always a good idea to have protective stuff going whenever you're doing something like this Just In Case. You always wear a seatbelt when you drive, right? So burn some protective incense (sage or rosemary or whatever you vibe with idk i'm not ur mom) or have some crystals out or just like do whatever it is you normally do for Extra Protection. What's your witchy seatbelt? Put it on.
Depending on what you're wanting to do there are different methods of communication. Some people use Ouija boards, which are honestly not as scary tm as they're made out to be. (Zozo the demon is a complete myth but that's another story for another time.) Ouija boards are typically considered a group activity but you can use them by yourself. If you decide to do it solo and you're feeling nervous are having visions of the Conjuring dancing through your head, it's probably a good idea to not do it with all the lights off in the dead of night.
Another method (and this is the one that I typically use) is the pendulum. Basically it's a string with a rock on the end. You can buy pretty ones on the internet or you can make one or literally just use a necklace. These are especially good for simple yes or no questions, and while you can trot out the whole chart and have a setup similar to a Ouija board, I don't typically bother (anymore). (I've gotten lazy with age.) It's super discreet as well if you're doing witchcraft on the down low
I know some people who are able to communicate directly with spirits through spirit writing (I think that's what it's called?) where the just kind of go into a meditative state and scribble on a notepad and the spirit guides their hands to make words and send a message, but I've not had success with this method. It strikes me as more of a medium-y type of deal. I have done tarot spreads to ask questions of spirit guides, but that's not quite what you were after, I'd imagine.
There's probably more methods than what I've listed, so if you have the opportunity to read up on it, 100% do so. Be safe, be smart, and be spooky.
I'm tracking this! I'm researching to help a fellow witch with a seance. (:
